Song and Photograph of the Week - July 28, 2014

It's almost August ALREADY?!? This summer is flying by so fast :(

Sometimes I forget about songs that I really like, and then randomly hear them, and fall in love all over again. It is definitely fun for me to rediscover bands/songs. This happened this past week, I'm not sure where I even heard this song, but I am a little obsessed. Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap. Absolutely LOVE that song, it is just nice, I don't know how else to describe it.

This past weekend I got to photograph a very precious 6 day old girl! She was one of the most laid back babies I've photographed. She slept pretty well, didn't fuss much unless she was "starving" it seemed like :P And man, can that girl EAT.

I love that little frown she gave me :) AWWWW!

Song and Photograph of the Week - July 21, 2014

Mini Session giveaway results are here! Mandie has been drawn to win my 300 fan Mini Session giveaway! Yay! Mandie contact me to schedule the session!

I really like some electronic pop music, and Tiesto is one of my favorites. The song, A Town Called Paradise is one of my favorites off the newest album (also named, A Town Called Paradise). Its just one of those songs that makes me want to dance! But, I don't dance so, I pretend and dance on the inside :)

I can't narrow the Photograph of the week down to just one image, so here are THREE!

The first one is from a family session I did on Friday. Scott and Shelby have a 6 mo old great dane puppy named Lincoln, you can see sneak peeks on Facebook. These two have great chemistry, and I'm so happy with the kissing shots I got. Makes me just want to say "Awwwwww." Does it do that to you? :) They are so cute! I am so glad they were okay with getting these shots, Scott even said during the shoot, "I just want to kiss her!" hah. So I let them ;)

And just because they are SO CUTE, here is another!

This third one is from my first cake smash session with sweet, Maleah! She was my first newborn I shot last year, today. You can see those HERE. She has become such a feisty, gorgeous girl! She was kind of a slow eater, but still adorable! She was a little iffy about getting the icing and cake on her hands, by the end she was using the wooden 1 as a fork. And her faces were to die for, so hilarious :P

Song and Photograph of the Week - July 14, 2014

So far July has been a busy month with being a nanny, making a ring, and a couple sessions. I finished editing a maternity session from the end of June, had a fun family session, and have a family session with a couple and their great dane "puppy"this week!

During a season finale of a show I watch called, Beauty and the Beast I fell in love with a song at the very end of the episode. It sounded vaguely familiar but couldn't place it. Come to find out, it was a cover of Latch by Disclosure. But, this version by Natalie Taylor was, in my opinion, much better.  So, Latch by Natalie Taylor, is the song of the week!

This week I have gotten a post up here about what I do as a photographer, and what photography means to me. The photograph of the week is this one of Sydney. It is a before (straight out of camera aka, SOOC) and after (fully edited) image. Hope you enjoy! You can see more before and after images from her session HERE.

More than the Camera

Song and photograph of the week will be posted later this evening :) I had this one done before going to my nanny job today! Enjoy!

I, along with countless photographers get comments along the lines of " you camera takes good/amazing/great photos!" It got me thinking, 'maybe my clients/ potential clients don't know what I do?' Just to warn you this is a topic I have a strong opinion about, and am not afraid to say so. I just want people to understand all the thought and work that goes into what I do :)

If you don't want to read all of this, at least scroll down to the before and after images :)

Too many people nowadays view photography as just clicking one button on your phones/cameras. For me, I view that as composing, not photography necessarily. People that have their phone/camera doing all the work (having it in auto mode) are just composing shots. Which can look really nice, don't get me wrong. But they are only framing the picture, they aren't thinking about exposure/shutter speed/where to meter, ISO, white balance, framing the subjects, where the light is coming from, and focusing/where to focus, all in addition to either giving people directions or dancing around a family tickling their kids.

Photography to me is thinking for your camera AND what you do out of camera (post processing/editing). Having taken a black and white film photography class has given me more understanding of my camera and other overlooked aspects of photography. The digital age has changed people's view of photography. For a lot of people, it has devalued photography, because they think anyone can do it. They are probably right. But as with any career/hobby/profession, anyone could do it with the right amount of schooling/training.

With people's definition of photography being only clicking one button, and letting your phone/camera do all the work, yes, anyone can stand there and do that. Anyone can frame an image and click a button. But not everyone will take the time to learn how to really use their camera, or how to post process/edit their photos, and make a style their own. That is the great thing about art, no one will have the exact same style (shooting or editing). Real art I think, is making something your own.

During my two photography (black and white film, and digital color photography) classes I have taken, I have learned how to shoot in full manual. I tell my camera exactly what to do, the only 2 things I let it control are White Balance (occasionally if the lighting is weird) and focus (unless I'm using a couple older lenses). Other than that...the list I stated above in the second paragraph are all the things I control! I love it. It has taken me a few years of shooting auto, aperture priority, and shutter priority to get to where I am today. Shooting in manual is so great!

One thing I really try to do is get things right in camera. I have a very natural style, I like to get things how I want it by using my camera. And as an artist I have the freedom to change images in post processing/editing if I had a vision for them, and couldn't get it how I wanted in camera. Now, cameras don't always get everything right, which is where I do some corrections. I correct the colors/white balance, highlights (blown out areas if there are any from too bright of sun), contrast, and some sharpening. After that, I edit in Photoshop to make them look how I want.

Just wanted to bring to light that my camera doesn't control how my images look, I do! Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Below you will find some Before and After images from Sydney's session (which will be up here soon!). The before images are straight out of camera (SOOC) and the after images are after full editing.

And I converted it to black and white. Which in Photoshop, looks more silvery grey, whereas uploaded on here it looks a little brown? I have no idea why though. Sorry if that happens to you!

Leave the Night On by Sam Hunt is the song of the week. I think I heard it on the radio first, and had to look it up. I just think its a catchy tune, and its upbeat. AND its country, just a warning for any country haters :P

I've posted this image on Facebook already, but it is going to be the photograph of the week. As many of you know, I went to Bend, OR for the Fourth of July. During the 6 hours I had to kill (12-6pm) I went up to Mt. Bachelor and rode the ski lift up to the summit. Pretty proud of myself as I am scared of heights, and ski lifts are not the best for that. But sitting down, I did alright. It was worth it, I got to see this cool rainbow cloud. Yes... a rainbow CLOUD. Definitely a cool thing to capture! This image is 15 images stitched together in Photoshop!

Sneak Peek - Prodoehl Family

I had so much fun with this family. Back when little Tirzah was 5 months old was the last time I got to photograph her [go HERE to see her at 5 months]. It was so good to capture them as a family this time. She wasn't into smiling at the beginning, but she came around! Here is a little sneak peek!

Song and Photograph of the Week - June 30, 2014

Yesterday was pretty busy! I totally forgot to post this one :P

Ive been discovering a lot of new bands recently. Spotify is so great for showing similar artists to ones I already love. I listen to Capital Kings already, and Royal Tailor came up as a related artist. This band is from Indiana, that met at a bible college in the mid 2000's. They formed their band to celebrate their Christian identity. They are a mix of pop, rock and R&B music styles. I really like their sound! One of my favorite songs is Hold Me Together, it is from their Black&White album from 2011. They do have another album called Royal Tailor from 2013, I would recommend most of those songs too!

This past week I did Maternity photos for a family that I know. Despite their daughter not wanting her picture taken at the beginning, she came around pretty fast. This is one of my favorite images from their shoot! She wanted to help show mommy how to lie down for me. She is going to be such a cute and loving big sister!
